About the word counter

Count words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs while you write. Reading time assumes about 200 words per minute.

How words are counted

Words are sequences of letters or numbers, including simple apostrophes. Whitespace and punctuation separate tokens.

Privacy first

All counting runs locally in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a Dockzio server.

Practical guidance

Check a writing limit and understand what was counted

Use word counts to compare drafts, meet an editorial brief, or estimate reading length. The destination editor may use different counting rules, so its final submission count remains the deciding check.

Count the intended submission

Paste only the material included in your limit. Decide whether headings, captions, references, and footnotes count before comparing drafts. This plain-text tool cannot distinguish a bibliography from the main argument or automatically exclude a quotation.

Worked example

The sentence We can't re-enter today. counts as four words: the apostrophe and hyphen stay within their word tokens. An emoji alone is not counted as a word. A destination that splits hyphenated terms may show a different total, even though the pasted text is identical.

Read the other measures carefully

Sentence counts use punctuation as a boundary, so abbreviations and decimal numbers can affect the result. Paragraphs are separated by blank lines; a single line break does not necessarily create a new paragraph. Character totals use JavaScript string length, so one displayed emoji may contribute more than one unit.

Use reading time as an estimate

At the default 200 words per minute, a 600-word draft estimates three minutes. Technical material, unfamiliar vocabulary, and reading aloud can take longer. After editing, recount the final text and check any separate character or byte limit in the receiving system.
